Games to play while locked away

Continuing our recent trend of stuff to do while locked away here is a quick game list of great games to play while you are inside:

 GRIP: Combat Racing

Grip is a spiritual successor to Rollcage. It keeps a lot from Rollcage including the breakneck racing, antigravity wall driving, 2 slot weapons systems and purely mad car combat.

Pros: Amazing graphics, great sound, heavy cars loaded with great weapons.

Cons: Steep learning curve, no story, deathmatch could be better.

Sine Mora Ex

Sine Mora Ex tries to separate itself from other side scrolling bullet hell shooters by making your time and your health the same thing. It would have been an unfairly difficult game if it hadn’t evened the playing field by giving the player an ability to slow time and a special weapon that varies from craft to craft.

Pros: Great 3D graphics presented in 2D, decent sound, weapons and explosions pack a punch, decently high challenge.

Cons: Confusing story, unfairly difficult at times.

Hotline Miami

The game that added fuel to the indie development fire. Hotline Miami is a fast-paced top down shooter/beat em up where one hit can kill you and most foes, while at the same time having a combo system so you have to be fast, brutal and well timed. Weapons range from melee weapons that can be thrown for some long-range damage to guns with limited ammo who call everyone when used. With simple graphics and an astounding soundtrack Hotline Miami is one for the ages.

Pros: Fast Paced, tons of gore, colourful and simple graphics, amazing Soundtrack,

Cons: Can be annoyingly difficult

Doom (2016)

The return of Doom in 2016 was met with applause and sounds of approval. It was ID Software’s time to return to their roots and make a game that was filled with blood, gore, violence and overpowered weapons being delivered at insane speed while looking good and running well. Doom unlike most games released after the first decade of the 21st century is a labor of love. With tons of secrets, challenges and weapon upgrades to be found while battling overwhelming odds it is definitely a fun game

Pros: Fast paced, great graphics, great sound, superb animation, melee kills are fun, great weapons, works well on most hardware.

Cons: Bit too brown at times, in game map is horrible

 S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R was an unexpected announcement at the end of the 90s and at one point nearly became vapourware. The game finally launched to well-deserved critical acclaim for its gloomy open world filled with anomalies, radiation, artifacts, mutated animals, factions and bandits. The missions and side quests only added to the great world and characters. To top it off the gameplay was made to be a survival shooter so using hiding spots, limited backpack, quick use of medical kits and the occasional gun jams made S.T.A.L.K.E.R intense as all hell.

Pros: Amazing world, great sounds, weapons match the world perfectly, lots to do with minimal repetition, encourages exploration while making you scared of exploration, lively modding community.

Cons: Graphics are dated by modern standards (mods can improve graphics), some enemies are just annoying, buggy without mods.

Gunpoint

Another indie darling made by lone developer Tom Francis. Gunpoint is a side-scroller with an ok stealth element but a great puzzle system where you can rewire electronics to trigger different systems like reconnecting a light switch to call an elevator to a certain floor. With 8-bit like graphics it’s no looker but it’s core gameplay of dodging enemies while solving puzzles makes it a fun time killer.

Pros: Unique puzzle system, stupidly funny dialogue, the performance report on game completion.

Cons: Overly simple graphics, average upgrades, little replay ability (you can get new levels from the Steam workshop though).

 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

EA properly screwed over the Star Wars IP with nearly all the games being filled with in-app purchases, thankfully after a shouting match with the community Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was born which was a return to form for single player Star Wars games. Though decently linear, Fallen Order has larger levels with tons of secrets coupled with fun combat and force abilities that are used to carry out traversal puzzles. There is also a metroidvania feel since you can travel back to previously completed levels to find secrets that only your new abilities can get you to.

Pros: Graphically Superb, great story, fun combat, fun world traversal puzzles, encourages exploration, no game changing DLC.

Cons: Too short, sound isn’t always above par, bit of a learning curve.

 Nail’d

Ahhh, Nail’d! A great off-road racer with an insane feeling of speed coupled with milliseconds of time to make decisions. The races take place on great tracks making you ride over ruins, jump over hot air balloons and between windmills all at breakneck speeds thanks to a very giving boost system. All of the previous is helped by a great rock soundtrack. While simple it’s fast, deadly and highly rewarding making it a game that can be picked up whenever for a few quick rounds.

Pros: Decent looking graphics, great soundtrack, extremely low learning curve, fun tracks, insane feeling of speed.

Cons: No story, occasional bugs.

 Vanquish

Vanquish is what all cover shooters should be, a fast-paced shooter with cover for emergencies. Made by the kings of hectic combat Platinum games, Vanquish has a lot of cool features that enhance the standard cover shooter such as rocket powered movement, bullet time, enemies larger than buildings and tons of chaos. The graphics and sound deliver in spades. Sadly, the story is quite generic but is somewhat saved by the voice acting and the so bad it’s funny dialogue.

Pros: Fast and hectic gameplay, colourful graphics, above average sound, nice upgrade system, funny dialogue.

Cons: Generic story, short, little to no replay ability, occasional long breaks in combat

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

While I rarely play strategy games XCOM got me hooked with its great level design, upgrade system and character classes. You have to use each class correctly to maximize their use which leads to a lot of tactical thinking. Adding to the tactical thinking is the limited capacity your units have to carry things so you need to get your load out perfect. It is also one of the rare times I have agreed to having a cover mechanic since here it makes complete sense. My only fault with the game is shots being missed occasionally at point blank range.

Pros: Great level design, good graphics, good sound, fun turn-based gameplay, tactics are important.

Cons: Lucky roll hit system.
